Why membrane treatments?

This membrane consists of 2 layers, the amnion layer, which is rich in collagen and the chorion layer, which is a thick collagen dense layer. The amniotic membrane also contains biologically active cells, regenerative molecules and multiple types of growth factors.

The general expectation is that a wound should reduce in size by 50% after 4 weeks of standard treatment. The longer a chronic wound goes untreated , the greater risk of infection, amputation and other infections.

Adults with diabetes undergo amputation due to non-healing wounds every year

Each year 80,000 adults with diabetes undergo amputation of the leg or foot due to a chronic wound, 80% of cases started with an ulcer. Treating these ulcers early with the most appropriate wound healing management is key to avoiding amputation.  Because of investment in wound care and research, our patients at ProMed tend to heal much quicker than the general wound treatments.

What Is Amniotic Membrane Allograft?

Amniotic membrane allograft (material made from donated human tissue) used as a protective covering and barrier. It is derived from the inner lining of the human placenta, which helps nourish a baby during pregnancy. The placentas used to manufacture the allograft are donated by consenting women following healthy, full term pregnancies and live births. All placenta donors are tested for infectious diseases before the donation process. Once the baby of an approved donor has been delivered, the placenta is collected and sent to a Celularity lab for purification and processing. At the lab, the placenta is washed and sterilized, and all of the donor’s living cells are removed. The allograft is regulated as a human cellular tissue product (HCTP) by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the processing facility is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).

Wound Healing Properties of Amniotic Membrane

Amniotic membrane has a number of characteristics that make it especially suited to wound healing. The amniotic membrane:

Contains a significant number of cytokines and essential growth factors

Reduces pain when applied to a wound

Increases and enhances the wound healing process

Has antibacterial properties

Is non-immunogenic (will not be seen as foreign material)

Provides a biological barrier

Provides a matrix for migration and proliferation of cells

Reduces inflammation

Reduces scar tissue formation
